Workshop FAQ / start with clear expectations
Before Your First Practice Piece
Use these answers to choose a sensible starting point. When material condition, tool use or a load-bearing design is uncertain, stop and get appropriate help.
Do I need furniture-making experience?
No prior furniture project is required to begin inspection and planning. Cutting and assembly require safe tool skills; seek hands-on instruction for unfamiliar tools.
Begin with material inspectionShould my first project be a chair?
No. Start with offcut connections and a small non-seating object. Seating needs more demanding design and validation.
Plan a modest practice pieceCan I use freshly cut bamboo?
Fresh bamboo changes during drying. For furniture practice, use appropriately dried, documented stock and check its condition before assembly.
Read the storage guidanceIs a larger culm always stronger?
No. Species, wall thickness, defects, moisture, geometry and connection details all matter. Outside diameter is not a strength rating.
Can glue replace a well-fitted joint?
No. Adhesive selection, contact geometry, surface preparation and curing must all suit the connection. A large glue line does not validate a poor fit.
Compare connection approachesHow can I check whether a joint is safe?
Practice observations can reveal gaps, splitting and movement but cannot establish a safe working load. Load-bearing furniture needs appropriate design and testing advice.
Do not sit, stand or jump on an experimental assembly to test it.
Does a finish make bamboo weatherproof?
Not by itself. Preservation, moisture traps, drainage, exposure and maintenance also affect durability.
Test a surface treatmentAre these accredited courses?
No. These are independent self-guided educational lessons, not accredited training, supervised assessment or certification.
Understand how the lessons workDoes the contact tool send my message?
No. It prepares plain text in your browser. You can copy or download the draft and send it through your own email service.
Prepare a learning questionWhere should I begin if I already work with wood?
Start with bamboo selection. Hollow sections, nodes, taper and longitudinal splitting make bamboo different from uniform timber stock.
Your existing layout and tool skills may transfer, but assumptions about fasteners and joints need rechecking.
